Over five fun filled days, families will learn about the challenges facing the future of air travel. Guided tours of the Civil Aviation Hangar and a new site wide trail will explore sustainable solutions. In the Shared Resource Challenge, visitors will need to work together to survive a crash landing in the jungle, choosing resources and equipment to plan their escape.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the National Museum of Flight. Located on the UK’s best-preserved Second World War airfield, the Museum first opened in July 1975 and is now home to a world class collection of aircraft, from a Supermarine Spitfire to Scotland’s only Concorde.
Steve McLean, General Manager at the National Museum of Flight, said:
“As we celebrate 50 years of the National Museum of Flight, it’s important that we also look towards the future and consider what aviation might look like in the decades to come. Sustainable Skies, part of Edinburgh Science Festival, invites families to learn more about these challenges while enjoying one of Scotland’s best days out this Easter.”
Visitors can board Concorde, explore two historic wartime aircraft hangars packed with exciting displays telling stories of a century of aviation, and become aeronautical engineers in the family friendly Fantastic Flight gallery. East Fortune’s wartime heritage is brought to life in the Museum’s Fortunes of War exhibition, and visitors can step back in time by exploring the recently conserved Second World War blast and air raid shelters.
