Woolly Weekend will return to the National Museum of Rural Life in East Kilbride this month. The popular family event celebrates the wonderful world of wool, running on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 May.

Press images are available here.

Visitors of all ages can enjoy a packed programme of hands-on activities, workshops and demonstrations. The event, which is free with Museum admission thanks to the support of Postcode Lottery players, will feature YouTube sensation Cammy
Wilson  showcasing traditional and modern shearing techniques.

Families are invited baa-ck to enjoy seasonal storytelling and sheep themed crafts including weaving and finger puppet making, with limited places also available to pre-book for a special macrame workshop. Inside the galleries, a woolly trail will lead little explorers on a journey through time from our rural past to a brand-new display highlighting Scotland’s Farming Future. Here they can meet Morag the sheep, an important cloned predecessor to the world-famous Dolly the sheep.

Outside the Museum, visitors will find fluffy friends including rare breed sheep and alpacas, or take the short walk up to the historic working farm where 200 lambs have already been born this spring. The farm is also home to Highland cattle, rare-breed Tamworth piglets, hens and the farm’s much-loved Clydesdale horses Gina and Anna.

Vicky McLean, General Manager, National Museum of Rural Life, said;

“Woolly Weekend is one of our most popular events and is a fantastic way to connect people with the skills, traditions and animal breeds that are such an important part of Scotland’s rural heritage.  From watching Cammy Wilson in action to seeing new-born lambs or learning how wool is transformed from fleece into fabric, it’s a weekend packed with discovery and delight for the whole family.”

Woolly Weekend at the National Museum of Rural Life runs from 10:30-15:30 on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 May, supported by Postcode Lottery players. Enjoy a range of delicious food & drink options from the Shielings café  or grab a tasty bite and drink from the Really Awesome Coffee food van and cool down with a treat from Thorntonhall Ice Cream – both located in the picnic field.

A museum, historic farmhouse and working farm, the National Museum of Rural Life in East Kilbride explores the land, people and ways of working that have shaped Scotland's rural history. On display in the museum is Scotland's largest collection of tractors, combine harvesters and farming machinery, while the farm is home to Ayrshire, Aberdeen Angus and Highland cattle, Tamworth pigs, sheep, hens and Clydesdale horses. Lanarkshire's Reid family lived in the Georgian farmhouse for ten generations, and rooms are as they would have been in the 1950s.
